Club trades international roster slot, $100,000 in General Allocation Money

Inter Miami CF announced today it has acquired U.S. Men’s National Team midfielder Wil Trapp in a trade with Columbus Crew SC.

In exchange, the Club will send $100,000 in General Allocation Money (GAM) and an international roster slot to the Crew SC. Columbus could receive additional compensation should Trapp meet certain performance-based metrics with Inter Miami CF.

“Wil is one of the most respected leaders in American soccer,” said Sporting Director Paul McDonough. “He has served as captain at both the club and international levels and fits the culture we are building here in South Florida. Wil is also a top-class midfielder with established success in MLS.”

Trapp, 27, is a deep-lying midfielder who represented Columbus Crew SC for seven seasons. He made his professional debut for the club in 2013 at 20 years old. In total, Trapp made 204 appearances for the team, registering two goals and 13 assists.

In his seven seasons with Columbus, he helped guide the team to the playoffs four times, including the 2015 season which saw them reach the MLS Cup final. He was also named an MLS All-Star in 2016.

Since 2018, Trapp has been an active member of the U.S. Men’s National Team. The midfielder has made 18 appearances for the team since January 2018, appearing in the 2019 Concacaf Gold Cup and international friendlies.

He originally made his debut for the senior team in 2015, appearing in friendly against Chile. His second international appearance came a year later in an international friendly against Canada.

At the youth level, Trapp represented the U.S. U-18, U-20 and U-23 teams. Notably, he appeared in both the 2013 Concacaf U-20 Championship and the 2013 U-20 FIFA World Cup. The team finished as runners-up in the 2013 Concacaf U-20 Championship as Trapp played all 120 minutes of the final.

For his performances in 2013, Trapp was recognized as the U.S. Soccer Young Male Athlete of the Year.
