Defender/midfielder adds quality depth to the Club’s historic inaugural roster

MIAMI, Fla. (June 25, 2020) - Inter Miami CF announced today the signing of Major League Soccer (MLS) veteran defender/midfielder Brek Shea. The Club further strengthens the squad with the acquisition of the versatile player ahead of the resuming its historic inaugural 2020 MLS season.

“Brek is a player who we know very well from previous MLS experiences that brings a lot of attacking threat and defensive solidity,” said Inter Miami CF COO and Sporting Director Paul McDonough. “He has been training and recovering from an injury, showing he is in his regular form and able to contribute to the First Team.”

Shea, 30, joins Inter Miami after starring nationally in MLS, and internationally with the U.S. Men’s National Team. The College Station, Texas, native brings a winning track record to the team, having won the 2019 Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup and the 2013 Concacaf Gold Cup. He’s played over 220 MLS matches and more than 80 games on the international stage across all levels.

After being drafted No. 2 overall in the 2008 MLS SuperDraft out of high school, the left-footed player has featured for MLS sides FC Dallas, Orlando City SC, Vancouver Whitecaps FC and Atlanta United FC. Shea featured for FC Dallas from 2008-12, earning 2011 MLS Best XI and 2011 MLS All-Star honors while appearing in 103 games, where he scored 19 goals. In January 2013, Shea signed for English Premier League club Stoke City and made his debut against Fulham on Feb. 23. In Jan. 2014, Shea was loaned to English Football League Championship side FC Barnsley before being loaned to Championship side Birmingham City in September of that year.

Shea returned to home soil in December 2014 as one of the marquee signings of MLS team Orlando City ahead of its 2015 MLS inaugural campaign. The defender/midfielder played 46 league matches between the 2015 and 2016 seasons before being traded to the Vancouver Whitecaps FC as a Designated Player in 2017. After featuring in 56 games in two campaigns, including three in the 2017 MLS playoffs, Shea was signed by Atlanta United for the 2019 season. Shea appeared in three matches in Atlanta’s U.S. Open Cup-championship run, as well as 19 regular season games, before suffering a season-ending right knee injury in a match against the Seattle Sounders on July 14, 2019.

Shea underwent surgery then, has been recovering at the Inter Miami CF Training Center for the final stage of the process and is fully healthy to play.
