With the start of the 2021 MLS season inching closer, Inter Miami continues its preparations at full speed to be in top shape for the Club’s second campaign. Recent additions to the First Team squad Joevin Jones and Kelvin Leerdam shared their impressions following their first couple of days working alongside their new teammates.
“I think the team is in good shape heading into the first game [of the regular season] next week. We’ve been putting in a lot of work, the guys have been sacrificing and I think we’re going to do well next week,” said Jones.
“I’ve only been here a few days, but they have been very productive days. It's never easy to join a new locker room because you have to learn the character of all of the guys, but I’m adjusting very well,” added Leerdam “For the new guys it's always a challenge, but we’re trying to fit in and show everyone why we are a part of the team.”
For Leerdam, the bond that’s being cultivated between players and the overall unity within the group represents a positive sign of better things to come for the team this year.
“The team wants to do well this season and hopefully we can achieve our goals this year,” stated the 30-year-old Suriname international defender, “Everybody wants to win. It’s not going to be an easy task, but every step we take will be a step in the right direction. The acceptance level from the other players has been great in my first few days here and that’s already a step in the right direction.”
Jones and Leerdam, both who bring an abundance of experience in the league to the squad including having previously tasted glory by winning the MLS Cup, are also eager to help the Club navigate its second year in the league successfully.
“I’m trying to figure out how to communicate correctly with my defenders and how it works when I’m in attack. I’m trying to figure out the right movements, where do I run, where do I stay and see how different players play their roles. It’s only been a few days for me training with the guys, so I’m still learning how everybody plays. The moment I figure that out it will be much easier,” detailed Leerdam.
“I’m open to playing both positions [left back or left midfielder], I just want to come in and help the team in whichever way. It’s a pleasure to be here,” concluded versatile defender and Trinidad & Tobago international Jones.
