MIAMI (March 20, 2019)– Club Internacional de Fútbol Miami got one step closer to launching its inaugural season in Major League Soccer in 2020, when the City of Fort Lauderdale unanimously voted to proceed with negotiations to transform the Lockhart Stadium site into a community-friendly soccer complex during a Council Meeting Tuesday afternoon.
With this key milestone, Inter Miami will work with Fort Lauderdale’s city officials to iron out plans for the abandoned 64-acre parcel of land. Plans include the development of a community park and free-to-use soccer fields, along with an 18,000-capacity stadium and a training facility for the Club’s MLS, proposed USL and Academy teams.
“It’s always been our aspiration through Inter Miami that the eyes of the world see the potential of our community and our city, so we’ve put our best foot forward with our proposal here in Fort Lauderdale,” said Inter Miami CF Co-owner Jorge Mas to a group of media during the Council Meeting. “We’re looking forward to bring our vision and execute on what, I think, will be a global soccer-centric project for South Florida based here in Fort Lauderdale.”
The Club plans to launch its first two years of MLS play at the renovated Lockhart Stadium site, until Miami Freedom Park is complete. The soccer complex would remain the heart of Inter Miami’s soccer operations as its permanent training home, and the stadium would continue being the home for the proposed Fort Lauderdale branded USL team.
