Inter Miami CF announced today that winger Edison Azcona has been called up to the Dominican Republic’s U-23 Men’s National Team. The young homegrown will join the team in Guadalajara, Mexico ahead of the Concacaf Men’s Qualifying Championship this month.

The Dominican Republic is seeded in Group A of the qualifiers and will face Mexico on Thursday, March 18, at 7 p.m. ET, the United States on Sunday, March 21, at 6 p.m. ET and Costa Rica on Wednesday, March 24, at 6 p.m. ET. The top two teams from Group A and Group B will then advance to the semifinals that will be held on Sunday, March 28. The two teams that advance to the final, set to be played on Tuesday, March 30, will qualify for the Tokyo Olympics 2021.

Azcona, 17, featured for the Club’s USL League One affiliate Fort Lauderdale CF in 2020. He impressed at that level, earning League One All-League Second Team honors and finishing as a finalist for the League One Young Player of the Year award. Subsequently, he made history when he was signed to the First Team on Jan. 26, 2021, becoming one of only three Inter Miami CF Academy products to be signed as Homegrown Players to date.

The winger has already factored on the international stage; Azcona was called up by the Dominican Republic senior national team in Oct. 2020 and then received his second call-up on Jan. 7, 2021, when he featured in friendlies against Puerto Rico and Serbia.
