Memorable night with a goal and two assists for Messi in his final appearance for Argentina
Inter Miami CF captain Leo Messi brought his brilliant international career to an end on Tuesday night with a goal and a pair of assists in Argentina’s 3-0 win against Benin. The victory at Estadio Monumental in Buenos Aires Argentina, which saw La Albiceleste don a special commemorative kit for Messi’s final appearance, featured a goal from our Club captain, as well as strikes from Nicolás Otamendi and Nico Paz.
Messi delivered a memorable performance in his final international appearance. The historic attacker was directly involved in each of Argentina’s goals, setting up Otamendi from a corner kick in the 48th minute, assisting Paz in the 61st minute, and ultimately adding a goal of his own by converting a penalty in the 71st minute.
The eight-time Balon d’Or winner brings the curtain down on a historic international career which began in 2005 and over the years saw him lead Argentina to the conquest of four titles (FIFA World Cup 2022, 2021 and 2024 Copa América titles, and 2022 Finalissima) playing a total nine finals along the way, and break countless individual records.
Messi closes his international career as the player with most caps (208), goals (126), and assists (70) for Argentina’s national team. In terms of the top competitions in international fútbol, Messi’s records include being the player with the most appearances (34), wins (23), assists (12), total goal contributions (33 - 21 goals and 12 assists), and wins (23) in FIFA World Cups, while also being one of two players to have featured in six editions of the global competition and being the only player in history to score in six consecutive knockout stage matches, and overall to score in nine consecutive World Cup matches. Additionally, the attacking maestro is the leading scorer in CONMEBOL World Cup qualifying history (36 goals in 72 appearances).
Following this memorable occasion, fans can follow Inter Miami CF and Messi in action at Nu Stadium as the team faces the final stages of the 2026 MLS regular season.
