Player of the Matchday

Luis Suárez Voted MLS Player of the Matchday for Week 3

Inter Miami CF forward Luis Suárez was voted the MLS Player of the Matchday for Matchday 3 of the 2024 MLS regular season.

The Uruguayan striker earned the honors just three games into his MLS career following his sterling offensive performance in the record-breaking 5-0 win over rivals Orlando City SC this past Saturday, March 2 at Chase Stadium. Suárez netted a brace in the first 11 minutes of the match and followed his two goals up with two assists aiding in the team’s largest margin of victory in Club history.

Suárez’s brilliance began just four minutes in, opening the scoring off a grounded cross from midfielder Julian Gressel by tucking the ball away near post with a first time right-footed finish.

Just seven minutes later, Suárez found the back of the net for the second time after receiving a cheeky flick from Gressel which he slotted to the back post. Suárez scored both of his goals within the first 11 minutes of the contest, registering him as the fastest player in Club history to score a brace from the beginning of a match.

His magic continued on as he dished out his first assist of the night in the 29th minute to Robert Taylor who found the back of the net for a tap-in finish.

Suárez then recorded his second assist in the second half, distributing an exquisite left footed cross for Messi in the 62nd minute.

Overall, Suárez’s impressive 67’ minute performance saw him net his first goals of the season and add two more assists to round out three on the season thus far, while in the process becoming the first player in Club history to log multiple goals and assists in a single match and helping the team extend its unbeaten run to three.

In all, in his first three MLS appearances, Inter Miami’s number nine has registered an impressive two goals and three assists in his 223 minutes of play.

In notably iconic fashion, Suárez is the first Inter Miami player to be named MLS Player of the Matchday since Leonardo Campana in Matchday 31 of the MLS 2023 campaign. He also earns this honor as the first Uruguayan player to win the award since Diego Rossi back in 2020.

The MLS Player of the Matchday for Matchday 3 was selected by media voting in a process conducted by MLS Communications. A panel of journalists from the North American Soccer Reporters (NASR) comprised the entire vote for Matchday 3. NASR consists of members of print, television, radio and online media.
