Inter Miami CF narrowly fell 2-1 to the Montreal Impact at Red Bull Arena despite a goal from Brek Shea.
"Unfortunately I think that we made clear errors on the two goals we conceded, especially on the second goal when the match was even. It was a match that either team could have won, we were close to converting our second goal. We couldn't afford to make any mistakes but we did and we ended up losing as a result," said manager Diego Alonso. "I didn't like how the team played in the first 25 minutes but after that the team adjusted and it became a back and forth match, and in the second half either team could have won."
Montreal opened the scoring in the early stages of the match. In the 6th minute, Bojan won the ball in Inter Miami’s half, took a few touches and launched a long distance effort that found the back of the net, giving the hosts an early 1-0 lead.
Inter Miami, however, struck back before the half was over. In the 33rd minute, Shea collected a cutting diagonal pass from Leandro González Pirez, controlled the ball on the edge of the box from the left side and struck a powerful shot that was deflected and found the back of the net. The goal was Shea’s fourth of the season, the second-highest total on the team, and the assist was LGP’s first.
The visitors looked to threaten in the second half, creating several chances through combinations between Dylan Nealis, Lewis Morgan and Gonzalo Higuaín. The players combined to create chances and shots several times in the match, including the 74th minute when Higuaín played a pass out wide to Nealis, who drove down the right wing and played a cut back pass to Morgan in the box. The Scottish winger dribbled to his right and struck a shot back across goal, but his shot was saved.
In the 80th minute, Montreal reclaimed their lead when Romell Quioto played a ball behind the defense into Bojan, who squared a pass into Maximiliano Urruti, who turned it into the net to make it 2-1. Despite mounting pressure from Inter Miami in the final stages of the match, Montreal was able to hold onto its lead through the final whistle.
The match took place at Red Bull Arena as Montreal is playing its home games in New York in accordance with MLS travel protocols for the 2020 season.
Inter Miami will return home to face Orlando City SC for the fourth time this season on Saturday, Oct. 24, at 3:30 p.m. ET.
