MATCH RECAP: Inter Miami CF Falls On the Road Against Chicago Fire FC

Inter Miami CF (9W-16L-6D, 33 points) fell 4-1 at Soldier Field on Wednesday night in the team’s road match against the Chicago Fire. Forward Josef Martínez scored the team’s goal on the night.

Lineup Notes

Drake Callender started in goal; captain DeAndre Yedlin, Sergii Kryvtsov, Kamal Miller and Noah Allen lined up in defense; Dixon Arroyo, Sergio Busquets and Benjamin Cremaschi started in midfield; Robert Taylor and Facundo Farías flanked strike Martínez in attack.

Match Action

The first half presented an even 45 minutes, with both sides in search of the opener, but not being able to finish their plays in the final third of the field. The match went into the break with no goals on the scoreline.

The hosts, however, were subsequently able to open the scoring early on in the second half, with midfielder Xherdan Shaqiri giving Chicago a 1-0 lead in the 49th minute.

Inter Miami was then able to get back into the game a few moments later, with a penalty being called in favor of the visitors in the 52nd minute. Martínez then converted from the spot to tie the match 1-1 in the 53rd minute. The goal was his seventh this regular season and his 12th overall this season.

Chicago then responded shortly after, reclaiming the lead in the 62th minute through a goal by midfielder Maren Haile-Selassie.

The hosts were then able to extend their lead in the 66th minute and 73d minute with Haile-Selassie’s and Shaqiri’s second goals on the night. Ultimately, Inter Miami fell 4-1 in its visit to Soldier Field.

Post-Match Reaction

"The possibility of making the playoffs remains for us, which is something that three months ago would have been impossible to think about…I also think the evaluation we do in the matches that remain is important to make the best decisions for next year," said head coach Gerardo 'Tata' Martino.

Next, Inter Miami will return home to South Florida to close-out the week by hosting FC Cincinnati at DRV PNK Stadium this Saturday, October 7 at 7:30 p.m. ET.
