Head coach Phil Neville named a new captain ahead of Sunday’s 1-1 draw with the reigning Supporters’ Shield champion Philadelphia Union, handing the honor to midfielder Gregore for the first time.

Following the match, Neville praised Gregore’s attitude and leadership attributes, citing the qualities that he feels make the midfielder suited to his new role.

“He’s an extension of the values that I want this fútbol club to have. His passion, his quality, his ‘never stay’ attitude, the way he speaks to people. His commitment to wanting everybody to do well. I think that’s what Gregore brings to this fútbol club and from day one he’s been outstanding,” said Neville.

“I thought on the captain-side, [he was] fantastic tonight...I just feel as if, with the qualities that Gregore has got now, I think he is a perfect captain for the next three, four, five years of this fútbol club.”

Gregore, who carries previous experience as captain at Esporte Clube Bahia, expressed his readiness to accept the added leadership burden at Inter Miami.

“The coach asked me if I was feeling ready to assume this leadership role and I felt very ready. I just want to be the best leader possible, on and off the field,” said Gregore.

“For me it’s a very important responsibility, it’s an extra responsibility that I like having. I am very grateful for this opportunity, and I enjoy having the opportunity to be able to lead the team by working hard.”

Neville also touched on how he feels Gregore has evolved since joining the Club, highlighting his rapid adaptation to a new language as a key to his ability to effectively communicate and lead.

“I think you talk about him making an impact at the start of the season but he couldn't speak English, he couldn’t communicate the way he wanted to. [But] he was captain of his previous club so we knew he had leadership qualities...He has learned outstanding English in three or four months, he’s a popular member of the team, he is a humble guy that comes in and works hard every single day and puts the team before himself. And like I said, he is an extension of me; when I see this fútbol team, I see him as being an extension of me. He is an absolute dream. I think he can go even higher in terms of his play when he gets 100% fit.”
