Alonso, Morgan and LGP on Team’s Attacking Threat, Substitutes’ Impact Against Nashville

Lewis Morgan vs. Nashville 8.30.2020

Inter Miami fell to a 1-0 loss in a closely contested match on the road against Nashville SC. Despite the defeat against the fellow expansion side, Inter Miami threatened in attack throughout most of the match and generated numerous opportunities in front of goal.

“We had 18 shots against five by [Nashville] playing on the road. That’s without taking into account the countless crosses that we delivered,” said manager Diego Alonso. “That speaks of the dominance we had on the pitch and the number of opportunities that we had.”

“I certainly don’t feel Nashville was superior over us. I think the stats kind of point that we were probably the dominant team in the game, and certainly towards the end. The only thing we were missing tonight was the finishing touch, that last pass, that last finishing action. But we’ve got a chance to put that right on Wednesday,” stated winger Lewis Morgan.

“Aside from Luis’ save, we didn’t really concede any dangerous situations. I think generally we were always more threatening attacking their goal and in the moments we created chances,” added center back Leandro González Pirez

Additionally, Morgan and LGP discussed the positive impact that the five substitutions in the second half had on the team during the final stretch of the match.

“Obviously freshness is always welcome. I think the five subs that came in made a massive impact on the game. We were able to use our freshness and we kept them pinned in their half for the last 20 minutes or so. It’s only natural for Nashville to drop off a little, but I thought the guys came in and brought a lot to the game,” highlighted Morgan.

“It’s something that we feel is great because a lot of times in the final moments a team gets stuck and can’t find the path forward or is playing well but is too tired, so it’s important that the players who came in off the bench gave us freshness and a change that is needed to get a result. Unfortunately, we didn’t get that result but truthfully we did great work. The result doesn’t feel fair, but we’re very happy with the subs because they gave us the freshness and the change that we needed,” concluded LGP.

Inter Miami will return to action Wednesday, Sept. 2, at 7 p.m. ET when it faces Atlanta United FC at Mercedes-Benz Stadium.
