Alonso: “We have to turn the page, keep working and learn from our mistakes”

Team Huddle - NYRB 9/23/20

Inter Miami will face the Philadelphia Union on the road just a few days after a difficult midweek loss to the New York Red Bulls. The team is looking to bounce back and secure a positive result in their first match at Subaru Park.

According to manager Diego Alonso, among the keys to success will be their ability to learn from their mistakes and adjust.

"We have to recover quickly and take it as a lesson. We have to be a better team than what we were in the last match. We were growing and getting better and we have to continue to strengthen ourselves in the areas we were doing well,” said Alonso. “What we have to do is turn the page, keep working and learn from our mistakes to become a better team."

Defender Nico Figal agreed with his manager’s sentiments, citing the positives to be taken from their previous performance while acknowledging the areas that need improvement.

“The last match, I think that we were in a situation to be able to tie it until about the 85th minute and the match escaped us in five minutes. From my point of view, I think the result was very misleading because in a lot of aspects of the game, or even the game itself, we were better than our opponents,” said Figal. “We have to improve on a lot of things for the next match, both in defense and in attack. We have to be more efficient in attack and try to keep a clean sheet.”

Alonso turned his attention to the team’s next opponent, a team which Inter Miami has faced in preseason and MLS is Back Tournament play.

“I feel that we played a good match when we faced Philadelphia in Orlando and we deserved more. We have to have another good performance, adjusting a few details from that day that kept us from winning the match,” he said.

With much of the season still ahead, the team’s leading goal scorer and assist provider Rodolfo Pizarro remained confident that the team can qualify for the playoffs.

“There are still plenty of matches ahead and we’re only three points out of the playoff picture. There’s still a long way to go, a lot of matches left, and I’m convinced we’re going to qualify for the playoffs.”

Figal, meanwhile, shared the belief that the best is still ahead for the Club and that the team has the potential to continue to grow its ambitious project.

“It’s a process, it’s a new team and we still haven’t been able to find that regularity that we want. I think this team has really important potential because it has great players and it can continue to grow.”
