Inter Miami Scottish midfielder Lewis Morgan has adapted quickly to his new surroundings as he enjoys his first season playing states-side. In his first handful of MLS appearances, the versatile wide midfielder has proved to be one of the Club’s major threats in attack; showcasing his ambidexterity, versatility, creativity, speed, and tireless work rate as he constantly seeks to open up spaces and create opportunities for his teammates.
Despite his youth, Morgan has enjoyed a successful career at the highest level thus far. The 23-year-old has already played in UEFA Champions League and Europa League matches, has donned the jersey of prestigious Scottish side Celtic FC, winning the 2019-20 Scottish League Cup title with the team, and has represented Scotland’s national team on the international level.
The Greenock, Scotland, native started his career among the youth ranks of Scottish teams Rangers FC and St Mirren FC. Morgan then went on to make his professional debut for St Mirren’s senior side at just 18 years old in a Scottish Premiership match against Celtic in September 2014.
In the next two seasons, Morgan appeared on the lineup sheet regularly, being deployed in different positions in both midfield and attack. His 11 goals and nine assists in 68 appearances between the 2015-16 and 2016-17 seasons didn’t go unnoticed, as he was called up to be a member of Scotland’s U-21 national team in 2017. Between 2017 and 2018 he played nine matches for his country’s U-21 side, recording two goals and two assists.
After his first couple of seasons as a professional footballer, Morgan made a breakthrough in the 2017-18 campaign. His stellar performances led to his signing with prestigious side Celtic FC, 51-time league winning club widely regarded as the most prestigious team in Scotland, halfway through the season in January 2018 before he was loaned back to St Mirren to allow him to help the team in their push to gain promotion back to the top flight. That season, Morgan was a leader in attack for St Mirren; racking up an impressive 18 goals and 13 assists across all competitions as the team won the 2017-18 Scottish Championship title and clinched promotion back to the Scottish Premiership. Overall, he played 118 matches as a St Mirren player; scoring 29 times and dishing out 23 assists before joining Celtic.
The 2017-18 season was a memorable one for Morgan on the international stage as well, as he made his debut for Scotland’s senior side with appearances in friendly matches against Peru and Mexico in June and July 2018.
Following his transfer, Morgan officially joined Celtic ahead of the 2018-19 season. He made 13 appearances, including playing one match in the qualifying stages for the Champions League and two Europa League matches, before being loaned out to EFL League One side Sunderland AFC for the second half of the season. Morgan finished off the campaign playing 22 games for Sunderland, where he scored the crucial goal that helped them reach the EFL Trophy final.
Upon returning to Celtic, Morgan won the 2019-20 Scottish League Cup and featured in 18 games, including six Champions League qualifying and two Europa League Qualifying matches, before crossing the Atlantic to begin a new chapter in North America. In total, during his spell at Celtic, he played 31 games, scoring twice and assisting three times.
On January 31, 2020, Inter Miami announced the addition of Morgan to the team’s roster ahead of the Club’s inaugural MLS season. The versatile midfielder has hit the ground running since his arrival to South Florida; dishing out the team’s historic first assist in the match against D.C. United on March 7, starting in Inter Miami’s five league matches to date, assisting two of the team’s three goals so far and being one of the team’s leaders on the offensive end.
